KING’S LYNN: Competition to discover talented trainee chefs

Foster Refrigerator has called for aspiring chefs to put on their aprons, sharpen their knives and get cooking in a new Masterchef-style competition with a top prize of £2,000 and the chance to attend a top cookery school.

The firm, based at Lynn’s Hardwick Industrial Estate, has launched its Chefs of Tomorrow competition which initially is being run in conjunction with trainee chefs at Lynn’s College of West Anglia, City College Norwich and Cambridge Regional College.

The competition aims to discover and develop young cooking talent, offers the opportunity to cook at River Cottage HQ in Axminster and will result in £2,000 of Foster products being given to the winning chef’s college.

Open to VRQ level 1,2 and 3 students, trainee chefs will be encouraged to develop a three-course menu using locally-sourced ingredients, but will have to stick to a £15 budget for ingredients. Judges will be looking for creative and inspirational menu ideas, and selected entrants will take part in BBC Masterchef style cook-off rounds in a bid to be crowned the overall winner and gain a four-day placement at River Cottage.

“This is a great opportunity for us to give something back to the industry and to be a part of developing new talent”, says Laura Kirk, a spokesman for Foster. “It seems right to support our local colleges, but we certainly hope to roll this out as a national competition in years to come. This will be a challenging competition but we know that there is a lot of talent out there which will rise to the challenge. It’s not intended to be easy, but to reward really outstanding skills and creative vision. We are enormously excited to see new cooking flair come to the fore.”
