A group of Lynn friends are launching a weekend school to teach Lithuanian youngsters about their heritage.

Grammar, geography and history lessons have been devised by Jurate Smukiene and her colleagues ahead of the official opening tomorrow.

Lithuanian Schools are already running in London and Cambridge to help youngsters growing up in this country to learn more about their traditions.

Mrs Smukiene along with Audronė Mordasienė, Inga Baublytė-Ulozė and Jurgita Laibinienė will be running the lessons in Gaywood Church Rooms from 10am to 1pm.

Mrs Smukiene, 30, of Fairstead, said it was an important project.

She said: “My friends have children who go to English nurseries and schools. What we have noticed after a few weeks is that they understand and speak English very well.

“What we want to do is to teach them Lithuanian so they can speak it at home with their parents.

“I want my children to be able to speak to my parents in Lithuanian.”

So far 15 children have signed up to the school but more are hoped to follow.

Lessons will be open to children aged between three and 12.

Games, songs and dances will be helping younger children to learn.

The older pupils will look at grammar, history, geography and traditions.

Mrs Smukiene said: “Most people know the main celebrations but they are not sure where they come from.

“We are not expecting our kids to be fluent in Lithuanian reading and writing but we still want them to know the language.

“Most of the celebrations we have in Lithuania are the same as here but we do have some differences.

“We have at least three celebrations in the summer. One of them is the mark the coronation of a king in the 13th century.”

It is hoped to have an event in the future which will be open to the local community.

Lessons cost £130 for three months. For any further information email: mokyklele@yahoo.co.uk or call on 07435 266418.
