GEORGE Chappell is a familiar face on the streets of Lynn and never more so than when he is out and about in his voluntary work as one of the town’s emergency wardens.
But on Tuesday he performed that role for the last time when he was on duty helping to ensure crowd safety at the traditional Lynn Mart opening ceremony in Tuesday Market Place.
Mr Chappell, who lives at Hillington Square in Lynn, said: “I will be 70 in June and I have got to pack it in because my old legs won’t keep going like they used to.”
He started as an emergency warden about 26 years ago on crowd control duties during the free Festival Too concerts which draw thousands of people to the same market square in Lynn every summer.
Alongside those duties, he and his fellow wardens have been called upon to help with searches for people who have gone missing, rescues and notifying residents at risk when flood warnings have been issued.
His services have also been called upon to help during royal visits and other big events in Lynn, like the start of a Tour of Britain cycling event stage or the Grand East Anglia Run.
Mr Chappell said: “The Mayor gave me a small gift for services rendered at the wardens’ Christmas training meeting and I have also been presented with an appreciation plaque from the Festival Too committee.”
