LITCHAM: Display of snowdrops starts garden season
Norfolk National Gardens Scheme began at Lexham Hall on Sunday with a walk showing snowdrops and aconites.
The gardens and parkland at Lexham Hall, near Litcham, got the 2013 Norfolk National Gardens Scheme season off to a colourful start last Sunday.
Despite the cold, almost 200 visitors called in to see the display of snowdrops, aconites and many winter flowering and scented shrubs on the estate, with its woodland garden and meandering walks.
This year there are 65 gardens opening under the charity fundraising scheme, including 13 new and returning ones. They range from grand country estates to groups of small town gardens.
Norfolk county organiser Anthea Foster, 58, who lives at the centuries-old Lexham Hall, said: “This year we have the greatest variety and quality of gardens I can remember for some time.
“We are very fortunate in Norfolk to have so many loyal and generous visitors to our gardens who, together with our dedicated garden owners, last year managed to raise a magnificent £75,000 for the nursing and caring charities we support.
“This was despite some difficult weather conditions and represents an increase of 10 per cent compared to 2011.”
Norfolk NGS press officer Graham Watts said the county bucked the trend, as nationally the scheme dropped up to nine per cent in income.
The three main charities supported are Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Help the Hospices.
