Review - Swaffham Players’ Night to Remember
The Swaffham Players put on a tribute night dedicated to their former president Ben Emmerson, who died this year, aged 82.
The entertainment took the form of an evening of cabaret, aptly-titled A Night To Remember. Ben was a tower of strength and a great supporter of the Players for many years.
The Conservative Club’s function room housed the event, which was attended by about 100 people, including Ben’s widow, Margaret, and family.
Perhaps such a show deserved a bigger venue which it certainly would have filled, with the known quality of fare on offer. The cabaret was expertly directed by Vicky Billmen, with support from joint musical directors Jill Dobbs and Richard Winch.
Acts included songs, comedy, a monologue and much more. Host for the evening was comedian John ‘Spike’ Hooker, who carried the show along strongly and seamlessly with his patter and jokes.
It was a joy to be there and if Ben was looking down he would have been very touched.
Proceeds from the evening will be split between his two favourite causes, Swaffham and Litcham Home Hospice and the St. Peter and St Paul Church restoration appeal.
