THOUSANDS of people flocked to Swaffham last weekend to sample the delights of the second Brecks Food and Drink Festival in the town.
Activities over the three days, which began on Friday, included a pop-up restaurant, cookery demonstrations, a food theatre, an art exhibition, school involvement and waiters’ races.
Festival patron and organiser Vanessa Scott, from Strattons Hotel, said: “We think we got just under 12,000 people over the three days.
“I have had a lot of emails and cards from people saying they thought it was better than the first festival last year, which is good because we tried to make sure there was something for everyone, including children.”
The festival was officially opened on Friday evening by South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss and Dr Pixie McKenna, of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies television series.
BBC Look East weather presenter Julie Reinger joined Mrs Scott in one of the waiters’ races on Sunday – and they both got a soaking from spilled drinks!
Three markets were held over the weekend, starting with an evening one on Friday, the traditional Saturday market and a farmers’ market on Sunday.
Swaffham’s Sacred Heart School pupils sang and danced in the Market Place and joined in a harvest festival at the parish church on Friday, then took part in the Mary Kemp Cookery Theatre on Saturday.
And local landscape historian James Parry gave an informative talk on the Breckland heathland, and how man gathered food and forged a living from it, on Saturday evening.
