SWAFFHAM Museum has opened for the new season with an appropriately romantic theme to its displays during February to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Museum heritage development officer Sian Hogarth said there was a good turnout of families and visitors on Tuesday to see the new displays, which include vintage Valentine’s cards and so-called vinegar Valentines – cards which tend to be more rude than romantic.

Children and adults could also make their own Valentine’s cards and have a go at the How Old Are My Knickers? quiz.

The undies on display range from the Victorian era to the 1980s, and include 1940s knickers made out of parachute silk and apple-catcher bloomers from the 1930s.

Miss Hogarth said: “People have been having fun with the knickers. One chap was very interested in the display and spent quite a long time arranging them. People also kept asking me if they had been washed!”

Museum volunteer Mark Taylor dressed as a wartime American airman for Saturday’s opening, chatting up the ladies and offering them chewing gum, nylons and oranges.

An old telephone which was on show when the museum first opened in January 1987 forms one of the displays. It appears beside a Lynn News cutting with pictures and a report of that occasion.

Miss Hogarth said: “We would particularly like to hear of people’s Valentine reminiscences for our Swaffham: Within Living Memory sound archives, including local romances, courtships and memories of the ones that got away!”
