LINNETS boss Keith Webb says schoolboy defending is holding back his side's Blue Square North play-off push.
The Walks outfit take a break from the bread-and-butter of league action tomorrow when they host Stafford in the FA Trophy, where the winners will pick up a cheque for £4,000.

But Webb is still smarting from the comedy of errors that saw three points slip from Lynn's grasp at Gateshead on Wednesday night.

Lynn lost the game 3-2 after leading 2-0 after 16 minutes (see page 103 for report) and Webb said: "We can't get away with defending like we did on Wednesday and I'm not prepared to put up with it any longer.

"I would have slammed my youth team at Norwich for defending like that.

"Gateshead were there to be beaten and as a manager you expect to go on and win the game from being 2-0 ahead.

"We've missed a golden chance to go seventh in the table and it's so frustrating as we are not that far away from being a good side."

punt

Webb added: "We gave a free-kick away in a silly place for their first goal and failed to deal with it when the ball arrived in the box.

"Gateshead's second came from a long punt up the pitch, which you expect your centre-halves to deal with, and we didn't defend properly for the third goal."

Webb has threatened to change his back line for the visit of Stafford, with Greg Crane the most likely candidate to make way should Webb decide to wield the axe.

"We are just conceding too many poor goals and I've got to do something about it as it just isn't down to individual mistakes," said Webb.

"If certain personnel are fit then I will make changes. If Bradley (Thomas) is available then he will come straight into the side.

"Everyone out on the pitch has a responsibility to defend as a team and attack as a team and that's something we need to put right.

"It's about having the ability and a steely mentality to grind out results."

The visit of Stafford presents Webb with a different kind of challenge as Lynn look to embark on a long run in the trophy.

"After two long away trips it's going to be difficult, but I'm not trying to make excuses," said Webb.

"Stafford are likely to prove a very difficult team to beat. They haven't had a game this week and will come here fresh.

"It's a game I want to win. It's always nice for the club to go on a bit of a cup run."

Midfielder Andrew Fisk is available after completing a suspension.

Striker Jack Defty completes the last of a three match ban, while Adam Smith's fitness will be assessed late along with Bradley Thomas.

Stafford's best form has come away from home, where they have only suffered one defeat on their travels.

Lynn have never beaten Stafford in a cup game – the teams having met twice in the FA Cup and twice in the General Motors Acceptance Cup.

The Linnets have, however, won the two Southern League encounters at The Walks.

This is an all-pay game and any replay will take place at Stafford's Marston Road base on Tuesday.
