Wednesday, May 11, 1983: HUNSTANTON'S new lifeboat, Spirit of America was named with an Anglo-American celebration to mark the occasion.
The naming ceremony was carried out by retired US Navy officer Vice Admiral Donald Engen, a former president of the American fundraisers who helped to buy the £22,500 Atlantic 21 lifeboat.

Our picture shows the Rev Paul Allton, vicar of Old Hunstanton, Holme and Thornham, dedicating the new lifeboat.

A feature of the ceremony was a flypast by a RAF Jaguar, piloted by Heacham-born Pilot Officer Richard Garwood. Picture: 83/2698
