People in Downham were given a glimpse of how renovations at the town’s Old Fire Station are going.

Downham Market District and Heritage Society are transforming the building into a heritage and learning centre as part of a £650,000 project.

The Discover Downham Centre will be showcasing the town’s history.

Work started on the Priory Road building in March after the society received the final £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Society members and builder, Steven Seals, enjoyed showing 90 people how the work is progressing during hard hat tours on Sunday.

Dave Flowers, chairman of the society, said five people had put their names down to be volunteers.

He said: “It was a brilliant day. Visitors were impressed with the work being done and with the layout of the building.”
