LESSONS about the dangers of speeding were handed out by pupils at Ashwicken First School during a road safety crackdown.
Any motorists caught speeding past the school were given a stern telling off when youngsters in Years One and Two joined forces with Gayton and Dersingham Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) on Friday.

A speed trap was set up on the busy East Winch Road and motorists clocking more than 40mph were asked to pull over and receive a telling-off from the junior crime fighters, or face a fine.

The event was organised after teachers, parents and children told the team that speeding drivers were a threat to child safety, particularly at pick-up times.

Headteacher Mrs Sue Collison said: "We have been campaigning for the last four or five years to get the speed limit reduced from 40 to 30mph, but without success as there have been a few near misses.

"The children were all very interested in getting involved in this event and made two large banners to hold up. They especially enjoyed telling the motorists off."

The children, aged seven and eight, will follow up their safety crackdown by writing to local councillors telling them about their efforts so far.

Police Community Support Officer Karen Girton said: "Speeding motorists and inconsiderate driving and parking around schools are issues raised by many people in our villages.

"We like to work with the community and this event allowed the children to feel a part of solving the problem."
