Norfolk Fire and Rescue Youth Development, which runs the Prince's Trust Team Programme, is working on creating an Olympic standard BMX track for youngsters at the North Lynn Discovery Centre.

To help generate much-needed funds for the project the team raised £576 by packing bags for customers at Lynn's Morrisons supermarket before taking to the town's streets in fancy dress to collect a further £172.

Members, dressed as a gorilla, chicken and giant whoopee cushion were all seen wandering through the town and even starred for a Channel Five television crew who were filming a documentary on how police use CCTV.

Their efforts were further boosted when DIY giants Wickes, based at North Lynn's Edward Benefer Way, donated £300 of equipment to help prepare the site for the new BMX track.

Management staff will also be using their days off to give expert advice to youngsters involved in the project.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Youth Development team leader Tony Lucas said: "This is a perfect example of how business can engage with the community.

"The support and service this team of young people has received from Wickes has been first class.

"The personal development, and in particular the self confidence and experience gained by working with staff from companies like this is invaluable, it will make an enormous difference when it comes to CVs, job applications and interviews."
