A BRAVE South Lynn woman who has beaten mouth cancer three times will be striding out next month to raise money and awareness of the disease.
Psychiatric nurse Toni Richardson (62), of Saddlebow Road, is taking part in the first ever 10K Mouth Cancer Walk in aid of the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
The event kicks off in London's Hyde Park on Sunday, November 19, and marks the end of Mouth Cancer Awareness Week.
Mrs Richardson, who will be joined by her daughter Vicki Grossman (33) on the day, said: "It's going to be good, I can't wait to do it."
The mother-of-five is no stranger to going the distance for charity, having completed a 10,000ft tandem skydive for Age Concern and the 5K Race for Life for Cancer Research UK in May last year.
Mrs Richardson, who works in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, was first diagnosed with mouth cancer in 1989 and had to have an operation to remove part of her tongue.
She made a full recovery, but in 2002 she discovered the cancer had returned in her jaw.
She endured 13 hours of surgery but it went badly wrong and she caught MRSA. She then had to have six weeks of radiotherapy and metal plates which had been inserted into her jaw had to be taken out, leaving her with a collapsed face.
Bone tissue was taken from her leg and used to replace most of her jaw, and she had to undergo extensive reconstructive surgery.
Then in April 2004 she underwent a further operation to remove more of her tongue after the cancer struck again.
Mrs Richardson was given the all-clear a month later and since then she has recovered well. And despite being left without teeth and having difficulty swallowing, she still speaks remarkably well and maintains a sunny outlook on life.
"Mouth cancer is very hard for one's family, they have to stand by and watch, but I am a very positive person. I keep myself busy and work hard and have a very loving family."
