NORFOLK'S Olympic hand-over flag made its way around the county on a bus on Sunday – but came nowhere near Lynn despite Lynnsport being named as a venue in the 2012 Olympics training guide.
The Norfolk flag, accompanied by David Beckham lookalike Andy Harmer, went around the county on a red London routemaster bus.
It started its journey from Pensthorpe nature reserve near Fakenham at 10.15am and was raised at various points as it headed to the east of the county, travelling to Norwich, Yarmouth, Wroxham Barns, Whitlington Country Park and back to Norwich to be raised at county hall.
The Norfolk flag was one of more than 500 delivered to places including embassies and British Council offices around the world. They were raised simultaneously on Sunday as Olympic Games in Beijing closed and London, which will host the next games in 2012, became the official host city.
As previously reported in the Lynn News, Lynnsport got one of the flags after being named among 65 venues in the East of England – and 600 across the UK – to be included in the training guide for 2012.
The Lynnsport flag was raised by West Norfolk Mayor David Johnson just after 2.30pm accompanied by a Summer Jam event, including BMX, skateboarding and skating events held in the Shed skate park.
Cllr Johnson was proud to be raising the flag – and that Lynn was getting involved.
Team GB is coming home from the Beijing games with 47 medals – 19 of them gold.
"I am very proud of what Team GB has achieved," he said, saying the medal total was more than expected.
He hoped the success would inspire others to take part next time. West Norfolk Council's cabinet member for sports, arts and open spaces, Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, previously said she was delighted the borough was able to join in the hand-over celebration.
"The next four years promise to be an exciting time," she said.
A Norfolk County Council spokesman said the Norfolk flag could not travel the whole county because of time constraints.
