Luther Griggs (19), who was said to be homeless, pleaded guilty to both offences.

The magistrates read reports into his background before imposing a one-year community order including participation in the Think First and General Offending Behaviour programmes. He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation.

Mr Kevin Eastwick, prosecuting, said Griggs was involved in stealing DVDs from HMV in Lynn and £100 from the bank account of Pauline Williams.

James Burrows, for Griggs, told the court his client spent the previous night sleeping in a garage but was hoping to sort out emergency accommodation. If he could get a roof over his head and benefits sorted out, he should not need to offend in future.

Griggs stole the DVDs because he thought there might be a chance to make some money.

He took LSD for the first time before committing the offence, but would not do so again. "He found the experience rather horrible," said Mr Burrows.

He stole the £100 because he was desperate for money. Griggs failed to think through the consequences of his actions, added Mr Briggs.
