MORE than 800 hundred people have signed a petition calling for a ban on dogs on Hunstanton's main bathing beach to be lifted out of season.
Organiser Denise Hunt hopes their views will now be taken into account when West Norfolk Council considers the results of its own survey on the impact of the ban.
Mrs Hunt, of Astley Crescent, Hunstanton, who owns two golden retrievers, collected
the names between March and April this year.
She said she left some of the petitions in shops and collected some of the names herself from visitors and local people.
Nearly everyone voiced complete support for a high-season-only ban and fears that the year-round ban would drive visitors away from the resort.
Mrs Hunt (53), said: “They felt it was going to affect a lot of businesses during the winter months. Hunstanton has always been known as dog-friendly. People go there to walk their dogs and then have fish and chips or a cup of tea somewhere.”
The ban was also causing problems for disabled people and wheelchair users.
She did not think anyone objected to a summertime ban and said she supported other restrictions introduced by the council. They included dogs being kept on a lead on the promenade next to the main beach and owners being required to clean up after their pets.
The council’s beach survey forms are being given out to people in the beach area of the resort until tomorrow.
Anyone who would like to take part can also do so online at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk
Mrs Hunt welcomed the questionnaire but said: “I just hope it’s a balanced survey.”
l Mrs Hunt is also calling for one of the signs advertising the dog exclusion zone to be altered.
The zone extends from the boat launch ramp to the start of the cliffs. She pointed out that a “no dogs” sign had been placed near the steps which were the only access to the beach in front of the cliffs, where dogs were permitted.
“The sign needs to be changed. It’s causing confusion,” she added.
