Eva Kemp, a much-loved teacher and councillor from Walpole Cross Keys, has been remembered in a special memorial garden.

Dedications to Eva Kemp, who died in 2002, have been made in the space at Station Road South, Walpole St Andrew.

Parish council members and the Mayor of West Norfolk, Michael Pitcher, unveiled a plaque on Tuesday in the garden and a second one was put up in her old classroom at Walpole Cross Keys Primary School.

Mrs Kemp's great-granddaughter, Becky Malkin, represented the family and a speech was made by John Fox, vice-chairman of Walpole Cross Keys Parish Council.

The former teacher moved to Walpole Cross Keys from Croydon in 1933 to work at the two-teacher village school. Eva retired from their 43 years later, aged 66.

She also helped establish the Walpole Cross Keys Parish Council, was a parish councillor for 40 years and represented the Walpoles on the former Marshland Rural Council and West Norfolk Council for 35 years.

Between 1991 and 1992 Eva served as Borough Mayor and became known as "Supergran".

It was only in 1995 that she stood down from the borough council but carried on as a parish councillor right up until her death.

Mr Fox said at the unveiling: "It is testament to the high regard in which she was held that the parish council is, seven years after her death, still remembering her contributions to making the village what it is today."

The garden also commemorates the railway that used to run through the village and the Mayor unveiled a second plaque that day next to to Eva's.
