POLICE are renewing warnings urging the public to be vigilant following a spate of thefts from handbags.
"The majority of the thefts have occurred during the day while the victims have been out shopping," said a spokesman for Norfolk Police.

In some instances, victims had reported that their handbags were left open while others had been careful to zip or fasten them closed.

"Other victims have reported being aware of someone bumping into them or brushing past them and then subsequently finding that their purse has been removed from their bag," said the spokesman.

"We would particularly urge people not to hang handbags from trolleys as they move around supermarkets as opportunist thieves may steal purses.

"The best defence is awareness and making it as difficult as possible for thieves to steal your valuables.

"Try and always make sure your bag is firmly fastened, close to your person and, if possible, place your purse in an interior section of your bag which can also be zipped closed."

Police countywide are tackling the issue with a range of measures including town centre patrols involving officers in plain clothes, extra uniform patrols and close working with local CCTV operators.

"We would take the opportunity to urge the public to be vigilant and take basic steps to protect their money, cards and valuables," the spokesman said.
