A review published by the Healthcare Commission saw the QEH score highly in a range of categories, putting it ahead of other hospitals in Norfolk and Suffolk.

The commission's survey lists hospitals as best performing, better performing, fair performing or least well performing – with the QEH coming in "best".

A check list of 20 different assessments included topics such as antenatal services, tests and screening, safety, staff training, delivery choices, support for baby feeding and aftercare, adequate staffing levels, standards of service and overall costs per delivery.

"We are delighted that the excellent care we provide for new mothers and their families has been recognised nationally. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our staff who always strive to give their very best," said deputy chief executive and chief nurse Gwyneth Wilson.

Patients who took part in the survey felt their length of stay was "about right" and were given information and adequate support to help them make the right choices before, during and after the birth.
The commission found there were high levels of post-natal care at the QEH, which has around 2,300 births a year, and gave high marks to the training, teamwork and staff supervision.

In the eastern region four trusts received the highest rating, eight the second, two were regarded as fair and one, in Hertfordshire, was deemed to be "least well performing".
