EMOTIONAL tributes are being paid this week following the shock death of the hugely popular karaoke star Nigel Hewitt.
Mr Hewitt, who performed as Nobby's Karaoke in venues across Lynn, was found dead on Friday after he failed to attend his regular booking at the town's Dr Thirsty's pub the evening before.

It is believed that Mr Hewitt, of Elvington, on Springwood Estate, Gaywood, hanged himself.

Around 200 people have already joined an online tribute to the performer at the social network site Facebook, while former colleagues paid their respects this week.

Dr Thirsty's manager Dan Horsepool worked alongside Mr Hewitt for eight years and said he was an immensely popular figure in the town.

He told the Lynn News: "All the staff will miss him a great deal, Thursday nights will never be the same again.

"Thursday night was Nobby's Karaoke. He was supposed to be here on Thursday and when he did not turn up, we knew something was wrong.

"He was always up for a good time and he always got on with anyone he met."

Mr Hewitt performed regularly at Dr Thirsty's on Thursday nights, often to packed audiences.

Among those paying tribute on Facebook is Jemma Yardy, who said: "Nobby made Dr Thirsty's worth going to on a Thursday. He was such a nice bloke, liked everyone and never said a bad word about no-one. You will be missed loads."

Amy Conyard added: "A brilliant person, absolute top bloke. Greatly missed, Thursday's will never be the same."

The Facebook tribute was created by doorman Malcolm Baker, of Lynn, who regularly worked at Dr Thirsty's on Nobby's Karaoke night.

He said: "He single-handedly turned it around on a Thursday night. It was the busiest place in town.

"He had a very big following and there was just something about karaoke with Nobby, he just filled the place.

"If there was someone who wanted to sing, or do a duet, he would always get up and sing. It was a job he was very good at and I am sure he really enjoyed it as well.

"It has been such a big shock. He was extremely well known and well-liked, he will be greatly missed."

Mr Hewitt was an electrician at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital during the 1990s and is still fondly remembered by staff.

Maintenance team leader Bob Walker said: "He was a very good electrician and a hard worker.

"While he was here he started up his karaoke business and became hugely successful at it, sometimes working up to seven nights a week, but that was typical of him.

"We were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his death. He was a real character."

Bev and Kit,

March 26/02/2008 14:42:32
Kit and I met Nobby (Nigel) at The Silver Sands Club in Heacham, approx 9 Years ago. We then met with him at his Karaoke nights at The Sportsman in Elm near Wisbech, he appeared there approx every 3 weeks. Following that for the past 3 years he also performed Karaoke at The King William in our town-March. He made everyone feel at ease, helped them over shyness to get up and 'have a go' and sing. He sang real well, and everyone enjoyded 'bopping' at the end of the night whilst he did so. We made many friends through him, met his family, and enjoyed his company so much he became a real friend, he was very good hearted, kind and considerate. He made many friends in March, they will all miss him terribly, not only for his expertise but for he - the person. As his theme tune said, Nobody Does It Better- and they certainly don't and never have and probably never will!
It is such sad news and such a shock, there will be a big hole in many poeples lives from now on.Our hearts go out to his family, we can only imagine what they are going through, but our thoughts are with them.

When I lived in March I attended 'Nobbys Karaoke' regularly at 'The Sportsman' & 'King William' pubs. Nobby had a knack of making everyone feel relaxed when they tried karaoke, even if they were originally reluctant to try he would sing with them or invite groups of their friends to sing so no one felt awkward. He was so persuasive he even managed to get my American Mother-in-law (normally a reserved person) to sing on her own when they visited the UK. I am extremely saddened to hear of Nobby's passing, his family are in our thoughts and prayers. Nobby was such a popular guy and will be sorely missed by many.

Some lights flicker and some lights shine,
Nobby's star shone the brightest of all.
There is a light that will never go out,
You may be gone, but your memory will NEVER fade.

Nobody could hold a candle to Nobby's karaoke.
Simply the best...better than all the rest.
The man himself was just sheer class,a true gentleman and a real absolute legend!!!
He will be sorely missed, not just by his family and friends, but by everyone that ever had the chance to meet him.
He was'nt just the local karaoke star to me.
He was a good friend, who over the years became a really great friend.
I first became aware of his work, like many people in Lynn as a regular attendee of his karaoke nights at the 'old' Globe.
Working at Dr.Thirsty's,King's Lynn, for over four years now and as a barman at Chicago's for one year previously,I had the chance to get to know Nobby really well.
In fact,I would go as far to say, that Nobby's night was the one night of the week that I really enjoyed working,no matter what my frame of mind.
I think that says a lot about the man and his vibrant personality.
Thursday nights will never be the same again without him.
We would often engage in conversation about one of his favourite subjects, his favourite band,Status Quo,and just in general about anything and everything.
If I was helping him set his gear up,on the odd occasion or two before his gigs,he would often regale me with his stories of what he'd been up to,where he'd been that week, where his next gig was,the latest 'Quo' news and the odd joke or two thrown in for good measure.
I have good memories of going to see Status Quo perform live with Nobby on a few occasions.
The NEC,Birmingham and at Holkham Hall last year immediately spring to mind.
He certainly caused a stir wherever he went, partly due to his resemblence to Quo's Rick Parfitt and at the NEC I recall,as he insisted on walking around the venue when we first got there wearing his shades.
Thats fine at an outdoor gig in dayli

Just wanted to say on behalf of Melton Constable Country Club, that Nobby will be greatly missed by all of our staff and members!! He would come to Melton about 2-3 times a year, but when he came the place would be absolutely heaving!! It would be one of the best times of the year! He was due to come on Saturday 15th March, and all of our members are deeply shocked to hear that he will not be attending anymore. He will be sadly missed by all! No-one can replace him, as he was a legend!! Our thoughts go out to his family at this sad time! RIP Nobby.

I'm shocked and saddened to read of dear Nobby's untimely death. Quite simply a nicer and more genuine chap you would struggle to meet. Genuinely enthusiastic and enthusiastically genuine.

Happy days in Sawtry eh Nobby ! Who else is going to duet Judas Priest songs..

Although only seeing Nobby during his visits to Sawtry, i'd like to think that he was as pleased to see us, as we all were to see him and if he had something troubling him, i only wish that maybe he could,ve sat down and got it out of his system with a sympathetic ear amongst friends, but even i'm not nieve enough to think that life is so simple..

My thoughts are with Nobby's family and other friends.

God speed Nobby -

With best wishes and deepest condolences.
Eddie and all in Sawtry.

" nobody did it, half as good as you - Nobby you were the best "

Nobby You are The best Ever. No Karaoke will be any better than you were. You really were the Highlights of everybody. When I first saw Nobby at The Working Mens Club in Sawtry I thought Yes this is what you call Karaoke. NOBBY Loved it when I become popular on Stage to sing on the Karaoke it was great fun.
Now after hearing the Shock I will no longer go to any karaokes. It will not be the same again. Nobby you are a STAR. We all love you. Miss you.
