A group of around 12 Year 10 pupils, all aged 14 to 15, went along to the National Construction College in Bircham Newton where the UK wheelchair rugby team has spent around 11 days training.

Last Tuesday's visit gave the youngsters, who are all studying for their physical education GCSE, to learn more about the sport while giving it a whirl.

Pupil Amy Cordy (15) said: "I can't believe how fast they go. I had no idea you could even play rugby in a wheelchair, they are so strong pushing the chairs around and playing at the same time."

Mrs Cath Bank, assistant headteacher, added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be inspired by a sport most of them had never watched.

"At St Clement's High we do a significant amount of work for our disability equality duty and this is a great way to promote the achievements of disabled people."

Wheelchair rugby, which includes elements of wheelchair basketball, ice hockey and handball, is played indoors and designed for athletes with disabilities affecting both upper and lower limbs.

The UK team finished training at the college, which has a range of sporting facilities and specially adapted accommodation, on Friday.
