SWAFFHAM Youth Council's fundraising efforts have got off to a flying start with a £500 donation from the makers of popular ITV1 series Kingdom, who have been filming in the town.
A further boost has come from Swaffham Lioness Club, which pitched in £100 to help the youth council meet the costs of holding a bingo night at the town's Assembly Rooms recently.

Kingdom producer Georgina Lowe and location manager Henry Woolley dropped in at the start of the bingo evening to present the £500 cheque to youth council chairman Emily Wright and vice-chairman Mario Goncalves.

Ms Lowe explained that as Swaffham had been "very welcoming" to the crew during filming of the third series it was nice to give something back to the community and this was one way of doing that.

Emily (15), of Mill Street, Necton, thanked them for the generous donation which is likely to go towards staging further events in the town, such as bingo and disco evenings, and the costs involved in setting up a youth council office and website.

She told the Lynn News: "We get a few grants from the town council and there are various other grants we can apply for, but every little helps and it's nice to get money from local organisations.

"We are hoping to do something specifically for the teenagers of Swaffham and aimed at our age group – and organising a disco is one of the things we would like to do.

"The website is something we really want to get up and running so we can tell people about our future events."

Emily said the bingo night was very successful, attracting about 100 people and making a profit of between £250 and £300 for the youth council's future events fund.

Swaffham's deputy town clerk Michelle Meyrick, who has been helping the youth council find its feet, said members would be discussing how to spend the money from Kingdom and the town's Lionesses when they meet at the Town Hall on Monday, October 20.

The youth council has a main core of about 12 members – and is looking for more 11 to 18-year-olds who go to school in Swaffham or live in the town to join it.
