Swaffham pupils go home after gas leak

ABOUT 178 Swaffham Infant School pupils went home early today (May 12) after a gas pipe serving the school was damaged during work on a new children's centre.
The leak was reported at about 10am. Headteacher Catherine Taylor said the children were not believed to be in any danger but were taken outside on to the playing field as a precaution.
Mrs Taylor said the main reason for closing the school was that hot lunches could not be provided for children who usually had them.
Pupils went out to play at roughly the usual time and had an extra long playtime while they waited to be collected and taken home. "They were all very sensible and well-behaved," said Mrs Taylor.
The last child was picked up shortly after 1pm.
Mrs Taylor said she hoped the school, which is in White Cross Road, would be open as usual tomorrow (May 13).
A spokesman for National Grid said gas engineers had been at the school from 10.45am. Work on repairing the pipe and reinstating the ground was completed by about 2pm. Nearby residents were not affected.
