Armed police have now withdrawn from a road in Sutton Bridge which was cordoned off after claims of threats of serious violence were made.

Withington Street and Bridge Road were closed off after police received the call at 3.40am this morning.

Police cordons were removed at 1.30pm after police discovered ‘the situation was not as first reported.’

A police statement said: “We were initially called to a domestic incident where threats of serious violence had allegedly been made against people who had earlier been in a house on the street.

“Our enquires so far have established that the situation was not as first reported and this has resulted in the downgrading of our resources in the area. Further enquiries into all the circumstances will continue.

“We can confirm that no-one has been injured and no-one has been arrested.

“We would like to thank the residents of Sutton Bridge for their patience during the course of the incident. From the information we received in the first instance it was appropriate that we treated the incident very seriously. Our main aim throughout was to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those involved and that of the wider public.”

At one point this morning, a group of people gathered by the edge of a field nearby, waving a bed sheet calling for the police to ‘Free Mr Sainty’.
