Guests to Melvyn Fitzpatrick’s 70th birthday donated birthday gifts with a difference, and all in aid of the Cancer Care and Treatment fund at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Melvyn, who is currently receiving chemotherapy from the Macmillan centre, and his wife

Val asked friends and family who came to the big birthday bash to make a donation for the fund in place of gifts. A total of £1,035 was raised.

The party was held in Leverington Sports and Social Club with a hog roast and raffle.

Melvyn said: “I have to thank my wife Val because she worked extremely hard organising the whole thing. I had never had a party like this; around 110 to 120 people came.

“I play the drums in a band called Hot Wired so we played at the party for free.”

Arlene Parcon, sister, of the chemotherapy room, said: “It’s a very fine gesture from our patient and it is really appreciated by the chemo staff.”
