Expansion for Gloria's head-turning business

HATS have given Gloria Hurn a head start in business and brought customers from all over the country to her shop at Burnham Market.

They are still the core of her business, but she is creating a treasure trail for shoppers by adding another 900 sq ft of floor space by extending above the butcher's shop next door.

"When I began 20 years ago I started with two rooms in a house fronting the village green. Then it went from four to six to eight and then 11. Now I have an extension over the butcher's, but that is as far as I can go unless I go underground," said Mrs Hurn.

She is creating a country accessories space in the new room selling products that will include cushions, curtains, soaps and socks and all kinds of accessories for the shooting fraternity.

Elsewhere there are rooms stocked from floor to ceiling with jams and preserves, pocket money gifts for children, crafts and candles.

But it is the Hat Shop that is still the main claim to fame and is believed to be the biggest millinery shop in the country with a stock of around 5,000 hats.

In a month's time, Mrs Hurn will also be opening more sales space above her craft shop in Wells.
