KING’S LYNN: ... but Bradley’s closes after losing fight against the tide

Bradley’s wine bar and restuarant on Lynn’s South Quay closed last week with the 10 staff being made redundant.

Owner Don Rutherford said: “It was with a heavy heart that I took the decision to close the restaurant, but it was losing money every week.

“Despite restructuring my finances last August, there was simply not enough trade to keep a restaurant of our calibre open.

“When we were busy we were very busy, but unfortunately there were a lot of quiet days as well and the expenses accumulate every day, not just on the busy shifts like Saturday nights.”

The 40-seater restaurant opened in August, 2005, in healthier economic times, and traded profitably, he said.

He added: “There was talk of a marina and further regeneration of the quayside, which suggested that the business would continue to grow.

“Regrettably, these plans came to nothing, although I understand that we may get a mini-marina – a few pontoons on the river – later this year. Too little too late, I’m afraid.”

The property was on the market as a going concern, but will now be sold for any alternative use.

Mr Rutherford said: “I very much regret letting down people who had bought vouchers, as well as customers who had booked to dine with us, but there simply was no alternative as I have spent my entire life savings pursuing a dream which did not come to fruition.”
