KING’S LYNN: Motorists face delays during road widening

Motorists may face frustrating delays along the main route into Lynn because of lane closures where widening work is being carried out.

A return to reasonably good weather after the snow and freezing conditions has enabled work to resume along Hardwick Road ready for the new Tesco Extra and Dobbies Garden World development.

Norfolk County Council’s resident engineer for the roadworks, Quentin Brogdale, said daytime off-peak inbound lane closures were needed over the full length of Hardwick Road between the Scania Way and Campbell’s Meadow junctions to allow road widening up to and around the corner into Scania Way.

He said: “To achieve this the lane closure will need to start between Hardwick roundabout and Scania Way, where three lanes will be available – left turn towards Tesco, straight on and right turn towards Sainsbury’s.”

Traffic leaving from the Tesco side will find the left turn lane into Hardwick Road has been closed, although there will still be room for cars and light vans to turn left at the traffic lights’ controlled junction.

Lorries leaving the retail park on the Tesco side and heading towards the town centre will need to go straight across into Scania Way, do a U-turn at the new roundabout near Sainsbury’s then turn right on returning to Hardwick Road.

Mr Brogdale pointed out: “There will no longer be room for right turns into businesses on the north side of Hardwick Road and a signed diversion will be put up sending drivers around Campbell’s Meadow roundabout.

“Work on the new retaining wall alongside Tesco’s car park has begun. Alterations to the traffic signals at the Scania Way junction are planned to start on Monday, February 11.”

Meanwhile, verge trimming is continuing along the new link road from Scania Way to the A149 Queen Elizabeth Way before safety fencing is placed around the culvert where this road crosses Pierpoint Drain.

Footway surfacing is also continuing, using off-peak traffic lights.

At the new Jubilee roundabout on the A149, road markings have been completed and work is starting on street lighting, so the current lane closures will need to continue, he said.

Tesco Extra and Dobbies Garden World spokesmen said: “We look to start building work in the coming months.”
