KING’S LYNN: Overnight roadworks start on A47 bypass next week
The A47 Lynn bypass will close overnight for almost a fortnight from next week when essential repairs and maintenance work gets underway.
Work to temporarily resurface the Harbour Junction Bridge, River Nar Bridge and Great Ouse Bridge and remove damaged sections of waterproofing is expected to begin on Monday, January 14, and finish on Saturday, January 26.
The overnight work will be carried out during weeknights only, with the bypass being closed from 8pm each night and re-opened to traffic by 6am the following morning.
Permanent work to replace the waterproofing, which prevents deterioration of the concrete bridge decks and creates a smooth, safe surface for motorists, will be carried out during the warmer summer months so that the material can bond to the bridge decks and provide a lasting road surface.
Highways Agency project manager, Brian Pitkin, said: “There is a problem with the current waterproofing material on the three bridges, which provide an important link for road users in the Lynn area.
“In areas where the material is damaged, it has caused the road surface to lift and crack. We recently carried out emergency repairs, after a hole appeared in the road surface, to ensure the bridge could continue to be safely used by the people of Lynn until longer-term repairs could take place.
“Work being carried out in January has been carefully scheduled to minimise disruption and will ensue the road is safe and serviceable for the remainder of the winter months. All work will take place overnight, on weeknights only, when traffic flows are at their lowest. We would like to thank road users in Lynn for their patience while we carry out this important work.”
While the work is carried out, the bypass will be closed in both directions between the Pullover Junction and Hardwick Roundabout, with diversions in place along the A1011 Outwell Road and A10 at Downham.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
