KING’S LYNN: Staff wait for news on jobs
Staff at Lynn’s HMV and Blockbuster stores are still waiting to hear whether their jobs will be saved as business continued as normal despite them being in administration.
This week, retail restructuring specialist Hilco bought HMV’s debt from the music and DVD chain’s lenders, Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland, effectively giving it control of the company.
Hilco, which already owns HMV Canada, is currently in talks with administrators Deloitte on the best solution possible for HMV’s 223 stores across the UK. The Lynn High Street branch, where 12 to 15 staff are employed, continues to trade as normal at present.
On Wednesday, it emerged that Hilco was also in discussions with administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers about acquiring the Jessops camera business brand, following the closure of its 187 branches including one in Lynn High Street.
This led to speculation that Hilco might be considering opening Jessops concessions in HMV stores, although yesterday a Hilco spokesman declined to comment on this suggestion.
Deloitte is also acting as administrator for movie and games rental firm Blockbuster, which has a store in Railway Road, Lynn, employing seven staff.
Yesterday (Thursday), a spokesman for Deloitte said the Lynn Blockbuster had not been “flagged for closure”. He added: “It’s still relatively early days and it’s still trading as normal.”
