King’s Lynn: Tesco 100 per cent committed

TESCO has confirmed to the Lynn News that it is still totally committed to building its £40 million new superstore and Campbell’s Meadow development at Lynn.

Fears that the retail giant might have had second thoughts about its ambitions for the town were sparked by lack of action on the site recently and suggestions that Tesco will be announcing a significant slowdown in its expansion plans when it announces its full-year results this week.

Tesco is expected to reveal a scaling back on opening new out-of-town hypermarkets in favour of spending money on refurbishing its existing stores and expanding its network of Express convenience shops.

But yesterday a company spokesman said: “We still intend to go ahead with our plans to build a new store on the Hardwick Road site.

“Timelines are still sketchy because of the Dobbies development, but we are still 100 per cent committed .”

Tesco got planning consent for the redevelopment of its current superstore and the former Campbell’s factory site on Hardwick Road in November, 2010, when it said it was hoping to create about 1,000 local jobs.

Dobbies, part of the Tesco group, announced in February that it wants to create an £8 million garden centre as part of the mixed use redevelopment planned for the site.

This would be the first time that Dobbies, which has 32 stores across the UK, would be trading from the same joint-site as a Tesco superstore, provided that it gets planning permission.

Its King’s Lynn Garden World centre would bring at least 120 new full and part-time jobs in the store and its 350-seater restaurant.

As well as a Tesco Extra, other aspects of the development could include a hotel, a car showroom, industrial premises and office space.

Meanwhile, Tesco’s big rival, Sainsbury’s, is pushing ahead with the development of its £40 million superstore – due to open by the end of this year – near the Hardwick roundabout.
