KING’S LYNN: The Gravy Boat sails into town

Two Lynn men have set up a new food delivery business which they hope will fill a gap in the market as well as hungry mouths.
The Gravy Boat at 13 Loke Road, Lynn, is the brainchild of Francis Bone, 36, and Darren Whiley, 45, who are cooking up traditional English food which is then delivered to doorsteps.
With roasts to go, home-cooked pies, grilled meals, a selection of hot meat rolls plus other options, they are confident they have found a new niche in the hot food delivery business.
Francis said: “We are preparing traditional English food for delivery and we believe this service is the first of its kind for Lynn. All our vegetables are fresh and the pies are made locally.” Francis and Darren do all the food preparations themselves at their base and a driver delivers the orders. Alternatively orders can be collected from the shop by customers.
“Since we opened in February, business has been steady and it’s encouraging. Although we only deliver in Lynn at the moment, we are hoping to expand and serve surrounding villages too,” he said.
Francis, who is also the chairman of the Friends of the Stroke Unit at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said he and Darren both had previous experience in the food industry when they used to operate a catering unit for music festivals. Later they set up a transport business. “It was after working long hours and getting fed up with takeaways ourselves that we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice just to be able to have a home-cooked English dinner delivered ready to eat. And so that gave us the idea for this new business,” said Francis.
The menu includes individual and family meals, starters, a children’s menu, extra vegetable portions plus a selection of desserts. The Gravy Boat is open Tuesday to Saturday with lunch and dinner services and can be contacted on 01553 762884.
