LATEST: 8pm target for fixing Lynn water main

Anglian Water says that it could take until 8pm tonight (Thursday) for its engineers to fix the burst main in Norfolk Street, Lynn, that is still affecting 75 properties.

Hundreds of businesses and homes in the town centre had no water or were left with low pressure this morning when water poured out across Norfolk Street, outside Van Pelt butchers premises, after the pressure forced a hole in road surfacing.

The 10-inch main serves a total of 4,000 customers, although they were not all directly affected by the burst. Supplies were restored to all but 130 properties by 1pm.

This evening, Anglian Water spokesman Antony Innes told the Lynn News: “The burst was worse than we first anticipated and the crack in the main is slightly larger. It will be 8pm before it is fully repaired.

“We managed to get another 50 properties back on by 3pm, leaving 75 still off in Norfolk Street. We are now in the process of delivering bottled water to the area and our engineers are still on site repairing the main.

“We have staff going round talking to customers and delivering the bottled water.”

Thursday is a busy night for pubs, cafes, nightclubs and takeaway food shops in Norfolk Street, particularly at this time of year with late night Christmas shopping, so they will be keeping their fingers crossed that repairs are completed on time.

The affected area of Norfolk Street has been closed to traffic during the repairs, with a diversion set up via John Kennedy Road, Austin Street and Albert Street.
