Lynn: Men in suits are ‘lunch hour yobs’

THE stoning of pigeons in Lynn town centre by a smartly-dressed group of young men has been condemned as “disgusting”.

Chairman of Lynn Town Centre Partnership, Ben Coulson, said he was appalled to have seen the group of adult men in suits and ties throwing stones at the birds in Norfolk Street.

Lynn has an increasing pigeon population, creating a headache for shopkeepers, because of the mess caused by the birds.

The town centre partnership meeting heard that one of the proposals being mooted to scare away the pigeons is a kite shaped like a hawk. But Mr Coulson, who is managing director of the Norfolk Green bus company, condemned the group of men he saw bustling around shoppers to get a better aim at the pigeons.

Speaking at the meeting on Tuesday, Mr Coulson said: “Young adults in suits and ties were throwing stones at pigeons on an old pub sign in their lunch break. I was thoroughly disgusted by that behaviour.”

West Norfolk Council and staff at the docks are working together on the problem with dock workers sweeping up surplus grain which attracts the pigeons.

Town centre manager Alistair Cox told the meeting that one of the proposals to deal with the problem was to use a hawk-shaped kite but he ruled out any cull of the pigeon population.

The deputy leader of the council, Brian Long, said: “The reason we have got so many pigeons is that they have got a ready source of food on the docks and in the town they have somewhere to come and roost.

“Unless we get rid of the food supply, we will get as many pigeons as there is food for them to eat.”

Another suggestion was luminous paint which might act as a deterrent.

Mr Coulson said: “..... I was thoroughly disgusted by that behaviour.” So he nor anybody else in the area - a) didn't attempt to stop these "yobs" or b) report them to the police if he felt he couldn't approach them personally. I'm sorry, his their behaviour in just ignoring them is as bad as the 'yobs' themselves!
