Lynn: QEH patients get British grub

HOSPITAL patients in Lynn are among the very few in the country who can be sure they are eating British, a new study has found.

Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) buys 90 per cent of its food from Britain, the Countryside Alliance Foundation found in a campaign to get hospitals to support our producers.

The QEH was found to be one of only 14 per cent of hospitals to note where its food is sourced and of those the amount of food it gets from Britain is well above the average of 62 per cent.

Mark Henry, QEH deputy chief executive, said: “We have an award-winning catering team and as a Trust we have always been firm believers in supporting local growers and suppliers.

“It makes better sense and gives us better value for money. All our meals are prepared fresh each day in our own kitchens and we take great pride in sourcing local produce where possible.”

The research was based on last year’s food purchasing in hospitals when QEH recorded £643,000 of its total £715,000 spend staying local.

Alice Barnard, chief executive of The Countryside Alliance Foundation, said: “Evidence has shown that investing in local produce means investing in higher quality food for patients, which in turn improves their recovery, and puts a little back into the local economy.

“The Countryside Alliance Foundation would like to see the Government buying standards extended to hospitals, to ensure patients, producers and taxpayers are getting the best possible deal from the NHS.”
