Mud, mud, glorious mud as beet campaign nears end
THE BRITISH Sugar 2008/9 campaign, which will come to a muddy end in the next two or three days, is likely to have been one of the most productive on record.
Agricultural business manager at the Wissington factory, Mark Culloden, said that while farmers have struggled in frosty and wet conditions in the last few weeks, the yields and sugar content and quality of the crop have been "excellent".
He said it has also been one of the best performances ever seen from the factory and could end up as a record if all goes well in the final few days.
"We just have to wait for the final figures," he added.
The plant has been processing an average of nearly 18,000 tonnes a day since the campaign started last September.

Sugar content has been around 17.6 per cent and the root yield has been just under 69 tonnes a hectare, which is well up on last year and the quality has also been good, said Mr Culloden.
He said that the only downside have been the ground conditions which has created some problems in lifting, especially in the last few weeks.
"Farmers and hauliers are to be congratulated on producing such a good crop in a difficult year," he said.
