New project for recycling electronic goods
Voluntary and Community Organisations across West Norfolk are being asked to get on board a new initiative aimed at recycling electronic goods and gain valuable training along the way.
It is hoped that these organisations will vastly increase the amount of equipment ranging from computers to flatscreen televisions which are recycled and at the same time learn new skills and generate funds.
The project, called GREENGO, is a not-for-profit recycling supply chain in the east of England for ICT Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
The setting up of this recycling chain will include free business support for all taking part. West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Action would like to hear from West Norfolk VCOs who wish to be involved in GREENGO. WNVCA has become a Norfolk satellite organisation, working in partnership with COVER – a Community and Voluntary forum for the eastern region – on this initiative. The project runs for two years and it aims to have up to 15 VCOs on board.
Project officer for WNVCA Marie Connell explained: “This initiative is open to groups or even individuals who would like to get involved with collecting this kind of equipment and passing them on for recycling. For every PC which is brought along, COVER will pay £5.
“It will be possible for people to learn how to strip down computers themselves or perhaps how to set up a small recycling initiative.”
Marie said GREENGO could involve all kinds of organisations including charities, schools or community groups such as scouts or parish councils.
The first two-day business support training sessions are already booked to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 12 and 13 at WNVCA, Regis Place, Bergen Way on North Lynn Industrial Estate.
This two-day session is free and training will include help and advice on both the business aspects of this recycling initiative as well as technical aspects which will include: Knowing what can/cannot be recycled for re-use; identifying the correct components for a functional computer; re-assembling hardware components; and installing an operating system on a refurbished PC.
