THE NEW host at The Winch, at West Winch, has spent all of his working life in the pub, catering and hospitality business and is relishing the challenge of his latest venture.

Danny Shea, 64, and his wife, Pat, had been living in Spain until the beginning of the year but were drawn back to be closer to their family and decided that The Winch was an ideal project.

He said: “I am looking forward to turning the business round and making it a friendly, relaxed place for people to eat and drink.

“I am a people person and I like to be out there in the bar talking to the customers. You could say I plan to be ‘mine host plus’ at The Winch.

Danny can call on many years of experience in the trade. He started as a waiter in London hotels, joined the Royal Navy as a steward when he was 18 and went on to hold various jobs, including management roles, in the licensed trade and catering.

He and Pat set up a cafe in Milton Keynes and moved to Spain, where they opened a restaurant and a bar restaurant before taking the decision to return to the UK and to West Norfolk.

Rather than making major changes at The Winch at this stage, they have given the pub some TLC to smarten it up and are concentrating on providing good food at competitive prices and getting to know what the customers want.

The menu includes a full range of meals, including steaks, pies and fish dishes and a carvery. Meals are served from noon until 4pm and from 6pm to 9.30pm each day.
