Recession sees revival of caravanning holidays

CARAVAN dealers are reaping the benefit from brighter weather and from a revival in the popularity of traditional touring holidays.

McDonnell Caravans of Gayton, is one supplier which has seen a surge in sales in the last few weeks and is celebrating the launch of a new franchise.

David Smith, who is general manager at the Lynn Road site, said that March is the month when they expect sales to pick up. He said that this season has got off to a good start, thanks to the improved weather and also to the economic downturn and the expense of travelling overseas creating more interest in the freedom and lower costs of caravan holidays.

Ian and Shelley Canham are typical of newcomers to caravan holidays.

The couple from Gressenhall bought a two-berth caravan from McDonnell Caravans last year to give them a taste of touring holidays.

"They enjoyed the idea so much that they have come back and have upgraded to a four-berth model from the Sterling range which we have just introduced," said Mr Smith.

He explained that Sterling is a replacement for the Avondale franchise which has ceased trading. and that Mr and Mrs Canham were their first Sterling customers.

When the couple arrived to collect their caravan they were welcomed by Mr Smith and by Alistair Larter, account manager with Swift Group, which owns the Sterling range, who had flowers and champagne waiting for them.
