SWAFFHAM: Plans for proposed new Tesco supermarket on show in town

MARKET day shoppers in Swaffham today (Saturday) will have the chance to see an architect’s impression of the proposed new Tesco supermarket for the town.

Developer Millngate is holding a public exhibition, with images, plans and detailed information on its proposals for the new store, in the George Hotel’s Pedlar Suite, off Mangate Street, from 10.30am to 3pm.

It has been looking to build a supermarket in Swaffham for four years and hopes to submit a planning application for a three-acre site on the EcoTech Business Park, off Castle Acre Road, early this year. It would be of similar size to Fakenham’s Tesco store.

Tony Sweeney, Millngate’s managing director, said: “We have spent much time creating a high quality design for the store which incorporates environmentally friendly materials and the latest ‘green’ technology.

“We are hopeful that the local community will support the new store and we are looking forward to receiving feedback to our exhibition.

“A number of people have already commented to us that the current derelict site is unattractive and in real need of regeneration. Our proposals will ensure this and will also create around 150 new jobs.”

There will also be the chance at the exhibition for people interested in working at the proposed store to register their interest and speak with Tesco staff about what it is like to work for the business.
