Swaffham: Plans for Tesco store displayed

PEOPLE in the Swaffham area have had their first chance to see what the town’s proposed new Tesco supermarket might look like.

Developer Millngate held a public exhibition, with computer-generated images, plans and detailed information on its proposals for the new store, at the George Hotel in Swaffham last Friday and Saturday.

It has been looking to build a supermarket in Swaffham for four years and hopes to submit a planning application for a three-acre site on the EcoTech Business Park, off Castle Acre Road, shortly.

The supermarket, which would be of similar size to Fakenham’s Tesco store, would be at the other end of the business park to the Waitrose store and offer about 150 new jobs.

Tony Sweeney, Millngate’s managing director, said: “We have spent much time creating a high quality design for the store which incorporates environmentally friendly materials and the latest ‘green’ technology.

“We are hopeful that the local community will support the new store and we are looking forward to receiving feedback to our exhibition.

“A number of people have already commented to us that the current derelict site is unattractive and in real need of regeneration. Our proposals will ensure this and will also create around 150 new jobs.”

As well as showing the plans and images, the exhibition provided an opportunity for people interested in working at the proposed new supermarket to register their interest and talk with Tesco staff about what it is like to work for the business.

Swaffham Business Forum, which represents the interests of traders and businesses in the town, has also been in contact with Tesco.

Chairman Chris Parsons said: “The forum is participating in discussions with Tesco about the implications for their proposal in respect of the effect on the town, and in particular its business community.

“We will be canvassing members and seeking their views so that they can be properly represented as part of the public consultation process.”

Invitations to the exhibition were sent to councillors and business representatives, and about 4,000 residents through the town council newsletter.
