SNETTISHAM tavern, the Rose and Crown, has scooped the top regional prizes in The Good Pub Guide 2012, winning both the East of England Pub of the Year award and the Norfolk Country Dining Pub award.

The pub was the victim of a particularly harsh review, back in March, by well-known restaurant critic AA Gill, who not only attacked the pub but also made several comments about the people of Norfolk.

In one of his more complimentary comments he referred to Norfolk as “the hernia on the end of England”.

Proud owner, Jeannette Goodrich, said: “These awards just show that Gill doesn’t always get it right.

“We’re thrilled, it’s a great pat on the back for our hardworking staff and a fantastic endorsement for the pub.”

Fiona Stapley, joint editor of the book said: “A top all-rounder and a particularly well-run old pub.

“The neatly dressed, courteous staff offer a genuinely warm welcome to all – children and dogs, too.”

Mrs Goodrich tells us her secret to success: “We offer a great atmosphere, fresh paintwork and fresh food with top quality local produce.

“We cater for every occasion from a pub lunch to an anniversary dinner and most importantly we’ve kept the traditional pub experience.”
