WEST NORFOLK: Cameron in A47 cash hint
The recent death toll on Norfolk’s roads was raised during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday by North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham.
And he received a hint of future funding for the main route between Lynn, Norwich and Peterborough from David Cameron in response.
Mr Bellingham told the Commons that seven people had died on Norfolk’s roads in the last week, and eight on the A47 in the past 10 weeks.
And he called for specific investment in the A47, adding: “Norfolk people understand the current budgetary restraints. They just want a fairer share of the resources.”
Mr Cameron said: “We have a much better record on road safety than we have had in recent years, but we should never be complacent and should continue to work on it.”
He pointed out that money had been made available for schemes such as the A11 and, referring to transport minister Simon Burns, added: “I can see from the Minister nodding vigorously behind him that there many be more to come.”
Speaking after the session, South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss welcomed Mr Bellingham’s intervention and pledged to keep pressing ministers to secure investment on the road, following the announcement of a £3 billion infrastructure programme in the Budget.
She said: “We have witnessed too many tragedies on our roads and I am keen to see funding allocated to ensure the A47 is fit for purpose.”
