WEST NORFOLK: Planners block bid to divert works lorries
Planners have opposed a bid to direct construction traffic through Watlington on its way to a proposed new overhead power line.
West Norfolk Planning Committee on Monday heard the electric cable would connect the proposed King’s Lynn B power station to the existing Walpole to Norwich overhead line.
If it goes ahead, construction traffic could be directed off the A10 at the junction with the A134.
Lorries would then travel down Watlington Road, along Lynn Road and out of the village on St Peter’s Road.
A Local Impact Report presented to the committee stressed the narrowness of the roads and the tight corners on the approach to the village from the A10, near the playing field and the village hall.
Alternatives should be assessed to avoid unacceptable impact on residential amenity in the village, said the report.
Cllr Chris Crofts said it was a densely populated area and not suitable for construction vehicles.
He called for liaison with Norfolk County Council to find an alternative.
Principal Planner David Parkin said the county council and National Grid were already in discussions about a different route.
A number of planning inquiry meetings are due to be held in April to look into different aspects of the overhead line scheme.
Mr Parkin said Wednesday, April 10, had been set aside to discuss construction impact.
The purpose of the Local Impact Report was to raise issues to be resolved at the inquiry, he said.
The committee agreed not to formally object to the scheme but asked for issues identified in the Local Impact Report, including an alternative route for construction traffic, to be addressed at the public inquiry meetings.
