Work begins on new £40 million Sainsbury’s superstore at Lynn
PRELIMINARY work has begun on Sainsbury’s £40 million superstore and petrol station near the Hardwick roundabout at Lynn.
The new store, on a 12-acre site close to Hardwick Road, will be creating up to 300 full and part-time jobs for local people, as well as helping to secure 200 existing jobs at neighbouring Pinguin-Lutosa.
The work now under way includes pruning of selected trees and clearance of small storage buildings which are no longer used on land which Pinguin-Lutosa gave up to accommodate the supermarket giant.
Work on the superstore will start in the coming weeks, with construction expected to be completed at the end of the year. Sainsbury’s has appointed Longcross, one of its long-term construction partners, to build the 70,000 sq ft store.
Sainsbury’s project manager Jim Woolcott said: “It’s great to be able to start work on our new store, which will offer our customers a much wider choice of products.
“The preliminary works have begun and we’re keen to get started on the main works in the coming few weeks.
“We look forward to working with our neighbours and local community throughout the construction phase with the aim of opening the doors before the end of the year.”
The new Sainsbury’s, including a restaurant, in-store bakery and delicatessen, will work in tandem with the existing town centre supermarket, which employs about 150 full and part-time staff.
