The launch of a business in Downham marks the start of a new era for its proprietor whose husband was shot in Afghanistan.

Lucy MacMurray’s life was thrown into turmoil when in June 2010 she was given the news that her husband, Alex, had been shot by a Taliban marksman while on duty as part of a bomb disposal team.

He was rushed back to the UK where he received treatment at a Birmingham hospital. Said Lucy: “I remember receiving the call everyone dreads when they have someone close to them serving in a war zone.

“It was very frightening but Alex was very lucky. He has recovered amazingly from his injuries, after operations and lengthy rehabilitation.”

Alex was shot through the leg and the arteries leading down to his foot were damaged. Surgeons managed to repair one of them using the artery of a pig, so that he was able to keep his foot. He also had bone taken from his hip and transplanted into his leg.

“The treatment took just over a year or so, but exactly a year to the day that he was shot, our daughter Evie-Mae was born,” said Lucy.

“Alex has now got full use of his leg back and has made a complete recovery. He was medically discharged and has gone back to his profession of being an electrician.”

The family moved to Downham in October from Ely, where Lucy, who was originally a hairdresser, was working on a mobile basis. Now she has set up a beauty salon at a room in her home in Brickfields. where she offers a wide range of treatments.

It was while Alex was recovering that she decided to make a career in the beauty industry. “It’s the best decision I could have made. It meant something good came from a scary and highly emotional situation.

“The move to Downham has allowed me to gain the extra space needed to be able to provide a friendly and professional environment in which to do the work I truly love. I’m so happy to be starting this new adventure,” she said.

Her beauty treatment rooms at Evellie Belle opened last month and she uses the brands HD Brows to shape and treat eyebrows; LVL Lashes to enhance clients’ existing lashes; Bio Sculpture Gel for nails; a Nouvatan spray tanning system; and AHFrancis lash enhancements. She has trained with AHFrancis and has gained a qualification as a master technician.
