Amazing response to busy food bank in Downham Market

Please find a photo of some of our recent collection, with myself and the volunteers who gave their time this morning to help get it all weighed and sorted. From left to right they are: Jenny Filby, alan Stephenson, Eamonn McCusker, Eve Stephenson, Virginia Hartley, Marian Stamp. A total of 743 kg was collected. Our thanks go to those who donated, the volunteers who manned the collection, and of course to Tesco Downham Market for facilitating the collection. Please can you put this acknowledgement into the copy along with the photograph.

Many thanks
Jenny Filby

Generous shoppers donated enough food and essential items to Downham’s food bank to fill 100 carrier bags and 40 crates during a collection at the town’s Tesco store last week.

Food bank co-ordinator Jenny Filby said: “We had an absolutely amazing response. There is so much food we had to organise a working party to sort it out.”

The Downham food bank opened in September last year, initially once a week, but has already increased its opening hours to twice a week to meet demand. It opens from 12.30pm to 2.30pm on Tuesdays and 10.30am to 12.30pm on Fridays at Downham Market Christian Fellowship. People are referred to the service via social services, childrens centres, GPs and housing associations. As many as nine clients came in recently, the most yet.
