The top prize of £1,000 sponsorship in an award scheme set up by Norfolk Farm Vets, of Grimston, has gone to 21-year-old Eliza Emmett, from Stoke Ferry.

Eliza, who is a duty manager at Strattons Hotel in Swaffham, and also describes herself as a part-time farmer having her own flock of sheep at home at Whitehouse Farm, Oxborough Road, was judged the overall winner in the first Aspire to Farm award.

The award scheme, for people aged under 25, aims to highlight the opportunities for careers in the agricultural industry and asked applicants to come up with innovative ideas and promote working on the farm.

Eliza’s idea was to produce a series of ‘Day in the Life’ videos of young farmers which she would then take into schools as well as upload to a Youtube channel.

She said: “I want the videos to be quirky, funny films to showcase why farming is the best job in the world. Who else is better to convince young people that farming is a career option other than young people already working in the sector?”

She plans initially to make ten short films of farmers from all sectors, which can then be made in a disc format, which can either present in schools herself or send to school for them to use.

Rebecca Colman, who works as a veterinary technician at Norfolk Farm Vets and who was one of the judges, said: “Eliza’s project was chosen as it had the greatest potential to reach out and inspire the largest number of people.

“We also felt her passion for educating others about farming would ensure the success of this project.”

And Molly McKay, who owns the vets’ practice and sponsored the award, said it had been encouraging to see such a postive entry and was looking forward to setting up another scheme in 2015.

Anyone interested in applying or in receiving further training to improve his or her farming skills should contact Norfolk Farm Vets on 01485 609031.
