Feltwell farmer Scott Watson is celebrating being named the UK’s top grower of radishes.
Mr Watson, who is a member of East Coast Growers, received the Salad Grower of the Year 2014 at an awards ceremony held in London’s Connaught Rooms last week.
His award recognised his pioneering approach to development and investment in growing crops and his outstanding contribution to the industry, increasing sales and improving customer experience.
Mr Watson, who has been growing radishes at Feltwell for more than ten years, has pioneered the use of Enviromesh, a cover similar to a fleece which keeps pests at bay, such as cabbage root fly, and which avoids the need to use chemicals.
As a member of G’s Growers co-operative, he supplies radishes to all major UK supermarkets, working with them to meet the needs of the customer. His constant trialling of new varieties and presentations has created new formats, colours, shapes and pack formats while retaining quality.
One of the key features of his success he puts down to having a happy workforce, which handle the crop throughout the radish season, which runs from April to October.
Peter Sargeant, managing director of East Coast Growers, said: “We are delighted Scott has received this recognition for the truly outstanding contribution he has made to the industry. It is a deserved award for his hard work and dedication, which has inspired his team to deliver exceptional results.”
