In spite of the fact that he used to “hate feet”, Ian Wells, from North Wootton, has become a fully qualified reflexologist and has just launched his new business.
He stepped out on his new career path having seen an advertisement for a course run by the East Coast Reflexology School in Terrington St Clement.
“My family couldn’t believe it, They all said, ‘But you hate feet!’ Interestingly, as I got into the course, I didn’t see feet any more, but looked at them as part of the body, so instead of seeing a big toe, I was seeing the head or ears of the person,” he said.
“I had worked with people with serious addiction problems for some years and trained in auricular acupuncture to support their recovery, so I took an interest in further complementary therapies.
“This led me to study reflexology and I became fully qualified in 2012 following 14 months of intensive training. My studies took me through many different styles including linking and precision reflexology. From my studies with the East Coast Reflexology School, I found I had a natural empathy and awareness of conditions related to the wellbeing of my clients.”
Mr Wells said that he continued to develop his skills through treating friends and family with reflexology and, more recently, reiki which he studied this year.
“For me, through my complementary therapy, I have supported the wellbeing of those with all sorts of injuries and hormonal conditions. Some times we take a “journey” that has a reason, and last year, when my wife, Ann, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I was able to support her recovery through my reflexology. Indeed Addenbrooke’s felt that this would be of benefit to Ann’s recovery, giving that positive contact through my treatments.
“With my qualifications in both reflexology and reiki this year, I invested in transforming a room into a tranquil and relaxing treatment area, where clients can come and have their treatment in a relaxing environment.
“My clients tell me that they can feel the benefits and I can see that I am making a difference and find it extremely rewarding. I now look forward to welcoming new clients.” he said.
